We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when the couple transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
