"When are you chatting with Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Several famous supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos frequently feature them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So everyone is invited to be the fourth part of the family."

Award Nod

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound confidence required a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
