The gravest projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by researchers, including a scorching 4C increase in average temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. A separate possibility envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and energy needs.

Credible Extremes, Not Predictions

These effects, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as unlikely but possible. The scientists said that these projections plugged a hole in planning that had left the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are plausible," stated the professor who led the study. "Britain has been formulating policy lacking the tools to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now given policymakers what they need to plan for climate outcomes they hope never happen, but must not overlook."

A Range of Severe Conditions Possibilities

Another collection of severe models maps the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These show that thermometer readings could soar in particular seasons by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.

The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what action will be taken to address climate change and how the climate system will react. This research was described as similar to defence planning or scenario planning for the banking sector.

Critical Scenario Details

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts breaks down or if vicious cycles including the Amazon rainforest becoming a net carbon source emit its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Crop production would be severely challenged and freshwater availability would be drastically changed," noted Arnell.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if polar ice in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already known by coastal engineers.
  • Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is sharply cut. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from burning coal block solar radiation from warming the ground.

Planning for the Extreme

The severe models could be utilized in planning the development of major projects, such as housing developments, energy plants and water management networks. Awareness of these environmental threats could also speed the drive to cut fossil fuel emissions.

The study developed the extreme models using a combination of observed and historical experience, climate models and scientific theory. The possibilities omit potential global problems such as the agricultural collapse and geopolitical instability.

The research was requested as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have cautioned that not enough attention was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and evaluate the threats for four degrees. Past policy documents have been described as being "inadequate" by certain experts.

An official statement noted: "Global warming is at the heart of the country's focus, both preparing for impacts and transitioning to a clean energy superpower. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the effects."
