Pat Bamford Joins Sheffield United After Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has joined the Championship side just seven months after instigating derogatory songs aimed at the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, without a club after departing from Leeds United, has signed a deal joining the Championship club in difficulty until January. Bamford's seven-year time at Elland Road concluded amicably this past summer.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds was to lead offensive chants regarding Chris Wilder amid the club’s promotion party this spring. Currently, the former England international will be playing under Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to pull the team he loves out of the relegation zone.
Past History Between the Striker and Wilder
The pair had a past prior to Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United lost the promotion decider to Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as a "muppet" when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won automatic promotion while Leeds missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Reconciliation & Moving Forward
All appears has been forgiven and forgotten with United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, in desperate need of improvement up front while Bamford looking to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. A repentant Bamford and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Chris Wilder commented back then: “Spoke with Patrick yesterday and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I'm uncertain regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We spent a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel too and had a longer discussion with him and he is a great person, a class act. When I was playing we would dish it out and accept it and that is an integral part of football at every level, even on Sunday league. I have absolutely no issue. I am cool with the situation and I said that to Pat.”
Recent Playing Struggles
Bamford featured in 18 appearances for Leeds in the previous campaign but the ex- Forest, Chelsea & Boro player has struggled with injury over the past few seasons.
