Italian Consumer Group Slams Ski Pass Price Hikes as Totally Unreasonable
Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as entirely unreasonable price increases for ski passes this cold-weather period, cautioning that alpine sports could become a luxury reserved for affluent individuals.
Significant Cost Rises Across Italy
From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now cost skiers €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is projected to hit €60, following substantial visitor surges during the previous winter.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Supplementary Charges
Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The expense of hiring ski equipment has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout alpine destinations.
Watchdog Leader Points to Unreasonable Hikes
Gabriele Melluso, heading the watchdog organization, stated that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.
"Particularly since Italian inflation rates are managed effectively and utility costs, which had raised operational costs for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.
He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, completely.
Visitor Decrease and Broader Context
He noted a significant drop in alpine visitors during the 2024-2025 season, with a million fewer domestic visitors hitting the slopes compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.
Even with these hikes, Italy remains a cheaper option for winter sports fans in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austrian locations.
Olympic Context
The increasing worry over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the global competition.
"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a message of peace and conversation... to stop warfare during the Games," he declared.
