Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
