European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
