Dracula Movie Critique – Luc Besson’s Passionate Reimagining of the Classic Horror Story is Ridiculous but Entertaining

Perhaps audiences aren’t clamoring for a fresh take of Dracula from Luc Besson, the filmmaker known for polished extravagance. And yet, it has to be said: his lavishly upholstered love story with vampires boasts bold vision and flair – and amid its theatrical camp, I’m not sure I wouldn’t prefer over Robert Eggers’s recent, solemnly classy version of Nosferatu. Odd details emerge, such as a scene that looks like it presents a land border between France and Romania.

The Veteran Actor as a Humorously Exhausted Priest Tracking the Undead

Christoph Waltz embodies a clever but beleaguered vampire-hunting priest – I can’t believe he hasn’t played such a part earlier – who arrives in Paris in 1889 during the centennial of the French Revolution. So does the evil Count Dracula, brought to life by the expert in grotesque roles Caleb Landry Jones speaking in a twisted regional dialect similar to Steve Carell’s Gru in the Despicable Me films. This character suits him perfectly.

The Plot: A Saga of Heartbreak

The story is this: the count has traveled ceaselessly the globe in anguish over four centuries after his transformation into a vampire, a punishment for his irreligious grief after the passing of his spouse Elisabeta (an inaugural screen appearance for Zoë Bleu, the offspring of Rosanna Arquette). the vampire has looked tirelessly for a lady who could be the return of his deceased partner. By cruel fate, the chosen woman is revealed as Mina (portrayed once more by Bleu), the modest betrothed of Dracula’s feeble property handler, Jonathan Harker (played by Ewens Abid), who just traveled to the vampire’s estate to review his land assets and the tiny painting of the charming Mina attracted Dracula’s gaze.

The Filmmaker’s Approach and Humorous Style

Besson arranges Dracula’s second-act backstory of worldwide travels wearing flamboyant outfits confidently, and he doesn’t shy away from offering humorous scenes with a distinctly Mel Brooks flavour – for example the vampire’s constant unsuccessful tries to end his own life post-Elisabeta’s demise, along with absurd moments that occur when Dracula applies to himself in a certain perfume in historic Florence, that renders him irresistible to women. Absurd yet engaging.

Dracula is on digital platforms beginning on the first of December and on DVD and Blu-ray starting the twenty-second of December. It plays in Australian cinemas starting February 5, 2026.
