Anthony Barry Reveals His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed to assist the England manager claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His journey from player to coach started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting with his first major job, he developed a name for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His stints with teams included top European clubs, and he held international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top according to him.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a systematic approach enabling us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We want to conquer the entire field and that's our focus many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The fitness, the flexibility, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts for managers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries including former players. For self-improvement, he went into tough situations he could find to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to work together again. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
