Investigative Image
A high-ranking Russian general has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The incident took place on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Authorities mentioned that one possible explanation involves the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.
Scene of the Attack
Personnel have been dispatched to the scene, which is understood to be in a southern district of the capital.
Accounts suggest the explosion took place in a car park adjacent to a residential building.
History of Assaults
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This most recent event echoes other notable incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source in the past attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are never officially confirmed as a matter of official stance.
The war has increasingly seen clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
